Oregon hospital removes gender identification from bracelets

A hospital in central Oregon has made a small change that represented a huge difference for its transgender patients: It removed the gender designation from patient identification bracelets. The Bulletin newspaper in Bend reports the St. Charles Health System adopted the change last month.

Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil held in Carbondale

The Saluki Rainbow Network, a student organization focused on building an LGBTQ friendly community on campus at SIU, held a Vigil in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance which happens on November 20. During the vigil they read off 320 names of transgendered individuals who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence this year alone. Codi Cornett who identifies as transfeminine is the Treasurer of the Saluki Rainbow Network says that the acts of violence could not only stem from transphobia but also from acts of racism and misogyny, as many on the list are transgendered women of color.

Vancouver's transgender community celebrates week of awareness and advocacy

November is Transgender Awareness Month and Monday marks the beginning of the week of awareness leading up to the Trans Day of Remembrance on the 20th. This week, the transgender community in Vancouver will be celebrating and memorializing victims of transphobic violence during the international week of awareness leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance Nov. 20. B.C. is ahead of the curve when it comes to transgender rights, and education on inclusion in schools is improving levels of acceptance, said Morgane Oger, the chair of the Trans Alliance Society.

Feds want to write transgender students out of Title IX, but colleges should tread carefully

In October, a leaked memo revealed the Trump administration is crafting a narrow definition of gender under Title IX that would be determined by sex at birth and verified through a birth certificate or genetic testing - a move that would leave the some 1.4 million Americans who are transgender without key federal civil rights protections. Title IX, the federal anti-sex discrimination law colleges must follow if they receive federal funds, does not currently define sex.

CCJ rules in favour of Guyanese transgender women - -says...

The Caribbean Court of Justice this morning allowed an appeal by a group of Guyanese transgender women contending that the law prohibiting cross-dressing is among other things unconstitutionally vague and contravenes their right to freedom of expression. To this end, the court has ruled that Section 153 of the Summary Jurisdiction Act complained of by the appellants be struck from the laws of Guyana.

Victoria's Secret exec apologizes for anti-transgender model comments

L Brands, Victoria's Secret's parent company, Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek issued an apology after saying he didn't think the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show should cast transgender models. In an interview with Vogue , Razek refers to transgender people as "transsexuals" and says transgender models shouldn't be cast because "the show is a fantasy."

Dozens of transgender women and gay men in the caravan moving through Mexico with hopes of seeking asylum in the United States have banded together for protection - not from the uncertainty of a journey fraught with danger from the gangs who prey on migrants but from their fellow travelers. Fleeing violence and discrimination back home because of their gender identity or sexual orientation, these LGBTQ migrants have found the journey north to be just as threatening amid catcalls and even physical abuse.

Police raid same-sex wedding in Tanzania, 10 arrests

Professor sues university for being 'punished' after calling female transgender student 'sir'

A professor at a small public university in Ohio is suing officials at the school after he received a written rebuke for not addressing a transgender student using the preferred gender pronouns. Nicholas Meriwether, a philosophy professor at Shawnee State University, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court this month against university officials.
